What is an ML5 Medical Certificate?

An ML5 Medical Certificate is a document that confirms a seafarer’s fitness to work on specific vessels. It ensures that individuals working at sea are physically and mentally fit to perform their duties without putting themselves or others at risk. The ML5 certificate is valid for a maximum of 5 years or until the individual’s 65th birthday. For those aged 65 or older, the certificate is valid for one year.

Who Needs an ML5 Medical?

You will need an ML5 medical if you are:

  • The Master of a passenger ship that does not go to sea (Class IV or V).
  • The Master of a commercial vessel that does not go to sea.
  • A Master or crew member of a small commercial vessel certificate for Area Category 2 to 6, no more than 60 miles from a safe haven.
  • A crew member or anyone else (e.g., catering staff) working on a domestic passenger ship (Class VI or VIA) that goes to sea.
  • A fisherman working on a vessel over 10m but under 24m in length that does not usually stay at sea for more than 72 hours or operates further than 200 miles from the UK coastline.
  • A new entrant to the fishing industry working on a fishing vessel under 24 meters in length that doesn’t normally stay at sea for more than 72 hours or operates beyond 200 miles of the UK coastline.
  • Applying for or renewing an MCA Boatmaster’s Licence or certificate
  • Obtaining a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) commercial endorsement

Why is an ML5 Medical Needed?

The ML5 Medical is required under international law as part of the International Labour Organization Work in Fishing Convention (ILO C188), introduced in the UK in 2018. It ensures that workers in the fishing and maritime sectors are medically fit to perform their duties. This legislation protects seafarers’ health and ensures safer working conditions.

How Often Do I Need an ML5 Seafarer Medical?

  • If you’re under 65, your ML5 certificate will be valid for 5 years.
  • If you’re 65 or older, it will be valid for one year.

It’s important to stay up-to-date with your medical to ensure you’re always compliant with maritime regulations.

What Does the ML5 Seafarer Medical Involve?

During an ML5 Seafarer Medical, a doctor will:

  • Review your medical history.
  • Conduct basic health assessments such as blood pressure, vision tests, and hearing checks.
  • Assess your overall physical and mental fitness to ensure you can perform your seafaring duties safely.

If all the questions on the form are answered with “no,” the doctor can issue your ML5 certificate. If there are any medical concerns, the case may be referred to a ML5 Assessor, who will make the final decision about your fitness.

Who Performs the ML5 Medical?

An ML5 Medical can be completed by any doctor who is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK and holds a valid licence to practise. You can get your ML5 Medical done with YEHS.

What Do I Need to Bring to My ML5 Seafarer Medical?

To prepare for your ML5 Medical, you should bring:

  • A valid form of identification.
  • Your completed ML5 form (if required).
  • Any medical history or documents relevant to your health, including information on any medication you’re taking.

Why Is It Important?

An ML5 Medical is essential for ensuring that you can carry out your seafaring duties safely, protecting not only yourself but also your crew and passengers. Being medically fit for work at sea minimises risks and ensures you comply with both national and international regulations.
