In 2024, I will have been a doctor for 40 years, and I have seen illness inflicted on many people, a journey which may take days or a lifetime – a doctor's interaction will only ever be a few hours of that lifetime. Doctors try to help where they can, but they are not with patients in those moments of pain, distress, and mental anguish. In those moments, patients require a form of relief from their symptoms. Medicinal cannabis can provide that relief for some of them. It can help those with chronic pain, chemotherapy side effects, arthritis, and gut problems. The wonderfully synergistic part of medicinal cannabis’ story is that our bodies were made for it. We humans effectively have two nervous systems, one of which we are mostly conscious about (the sympathetic) and another that we have little awareness of (the parasympathetic). We talk about "gut feelings," and this is the second system that is as important as the first. Fortunately for us, medicinal cannabis has beneficial effects on both systems without causing hallucinatory effects.
